Choosing a Solar Power Bird Bath For The Garden |
|
|
I recently went shopping to purchase a solar power bird bath. As an avid birdwatcher, I wanted to be able to provide an enticing spot for my feathered friends to gather this winter. Since I haven’t seen a bird with ice skates yet, I knew that I needed to have a heated bird bath. What I didn’t realize was how many choices I would have to make to find the perfect bird bath for my backyard. Solar bird baths come in such a variety of materials and styles that I really had a tough time making my decision. The first choice that I had to make was what kind of material that I wanted the bird bath to be made of. Resin, stone, wood and metal are the main options available. I get a lot of wind in my yard so needed something durable and heavy enough not to blow over in a strong wind. I also needed something durable enough to survive snow since I live in the northeast. You will need to evaluate your climate and conditions when choosing the right material for your solar power bird bath. The second choice to be made was the style of bird bath that I wanted. A solar power bird bath can be a simple heated design, a lighted bath or even a fountain style with moving water (with or without lights). I already knew that I wanted the bird bath to be heated so the birds would have a place to play this winter. I decided to get a design that incorporated a water fountain to keep the water fresh as well as lights so I could watch at night. The solar energy accumulated in the solar cells during the day will keep the lights glowing for 4 to 6 hours in the evening. Along with the style of bird bath, you will also have to determine where you are going to place it in your yard so you will know which type of solar power system it will need. If you place the bird bath in a bright, sunny part of the yard then you can buy a bird bath with the PV cells built in. If you want to put the bird bath in a shady spot, you will need to buy one that has a separate solar panel that you can place in a location where it will get the required sunlight. Since a solar power bird bath is both functional and decorative, you will need to keep in mind your landscaping style. I found a beautiful copper bird bath with a fountain and lights that will look great in my cottage style garden. As it ages, the copper will develop a lovely patina that will fit well with the other antique elements in my yard. With the great variety of materials and styles available, you too will be able to find a bird bath to keep the birds happy and still look great in your yard. |
